I think Alan was looking for a team to play on but I enjoyed reading his history so I'll contribute too.
For me it was something like this. At the company where I worked, we had office space in an elementary school. That's right a school for little kids. So everyday at 3:30 we would go out to the playground and get in a half hour of highly competitive, somewhat violent, "adult" Four-Square.
It was a blast. During that time an electronic dartboard was hanging on the wall in one of the storage areas and no one ever threw a single dart at it ever. Then something very sad happened. We moved. The elementary school was going to be torn down to make way for a grocery store and condos and we moved to a normal office building in a normal neighborhood. The elecronic dartboard came with us.
There was a park about three blocks away. We tried substituting frisbee for the beloved four-square but it didn't catch on and we were left without a three thirty recess activity. So one day the electronic dartboard got hung in the testing room (where we tested our website) and finally it got some attention.
Darts quickly caught on for those of us in the geek group. We started out just a few games at 3:30, but the fever spread and we ended up just sort of "catching quickies" for breaks between programming (and in my case server maintenance). The office that the eboard was in was next to the main artist guy. He started to complain about the noise form the board.. the bells and whistle and trumpeting that occured everytime someone hit bull. Not to mention a plastic dart crashing into a loose plate plastic board is a loud noise to begin with.
Thus we decided to replace the electronic board with its sisal cousin and the new passion was born. It wasn't long before just a couple of games during the day was not enough. On wednesday nights we started going down to a place called the Eastlake Zoo for afterwork beers and darts. We did this for probably a year before one of our numbers announced he couldn't play on wednesday nights anymore because he was joining league. Our little group withered but the fever did not break for me. I joined league with him and we did quite well for a several seasons.
We even won first place one season, beating a team full of Irishmen who were as formidible as they were friendly. Three years and about thirty sets of darts later I am still going strong, although my good dart buddies are far away. I am still in league though, and still trying to improve. For me half the fun of darts is throwing sharp things, and the other half the fun is collecting. I have too many darts, and now I am on to boards. I hope to someday match Alan's collection!
